Daily Mail leads the charge against the coalition over human rights act

Thursday, May 20, 2010

The final paragraph of today's Daily Mail leading article (devoted to attacking the Lib Dems' defence of the human rights act) is sure to be repeated in similar form in the coming weeks and months:
Shouldn't Mr Cameron be quicker to remind Mr Clegg the Tories polled four million more votes than the Lib Dems?
It is just one of the indicators of the paper's hostility to the Tory-Lib coalition.
There is also the two-page spread headlined THE HUMAN RIGHTS CAVE-IN: Cameron pledged to scrap Act... now Clegg champions it under ANOTHER coalition compromise.
And Stephen Glover weighs in with It's early days, I know, but if Mr Cameron keeps dumping cherished Tory beliefs, there'll be trouble...
Further on, on a "news" page, we reach a page lead Clegg's tax revolution: He wants to roll back the state - and then give councils more of our money! Below it is a sniffy piece by Quentin Letts about Clegg's first big speech as deputy prime minister headlined Cleggy, Dave's very own Private Pike...
There hasn't been a honeymoon period for the coalition in the Mail. It will have no truck with the Lib-Dem side of the partnership and will surely do all it can to unravel the parties.
Other infuriated Tory-supporting papers are likely to do the same, of course.
For example, today's leader in The Times calls on the Conservatives to honour their election manifesto by repealing the ban on foxhunting. The paper knows well enough that this is a no-no for the Lib-Dems, but reminds Cameron that his party "is the leading partner in this coalition" and that "the Tories should not run scared of their instincts."
Coming at Clegg from the opposite side is The Times's commentator David Aaronovitch, There's too much Old in this New Politics. He deconstructs Clegg's speech and finds it, and him, sorely wanting.
Similarly, in the Daily Telegraph, its sketch writer, Andrew Gimson, argues that the new politics is both confusing and a deception.
By contrast, the paper's leading article is altogether warmer towards Clegg. In A bold vision for better government, the paper welcomes much of the Lib-Dem leader's proposals, though it has reservations about the 55% hurdle to dissolve parliament before its five-year fixed term of office.
And The Sun? Its news report on the coalition pact refers to "fresh uproar in the Tory ranks" because of Clegg's opposition to lowering taxes, but it was neutral enough.
Columnist Kelvin MacKenzie is not at all neutral (well, he doesn't do neutral, of course). He lays into "Dave and his little mates" for daring to increase capital gains tax on rental income. He concludes: "Could I urge you, Mr Cameron, to tell the Cleggies to get stuffed."
His major point is that the Tory toffs don't understand the needs of working class Tory voters.
Again, this is a theme likely to be explored often in future in order to expose the fragility of the coalition. It means there are at least two splits for papers to pursue - the obvious one between the Tories and the Lib-Dems and then the one within the Tory party that centres on differences of social class.

Democratic Downturn in Pennsylvania?

SEAN HANNITY, HOST: The one and only governor of the great state of Pennsylvania — my favorite cheesesteak — my friend is Governor Rendell.
Welcome back, sir.
GOVERNOR ED RENDELL, D-PA.: Good evening, Sean. Those returns in Pennsylvania are probably weighted a little heavy in Philadelphia so by no means is Senator Specter out of woods yet.
HANNITY: Yes, well, then you were a big part — look, from the very beginning, you've been his biggest supporter. Let me go back and I want to drag the White House into this in this way.
When Arlen Specter switched parties the White House said that he had the president's full support. And you know, here it is, everybody knew that this was going to be a close primary. And President Obama flew over to Ohio, had a chance to go in this weekend, and didn't go in to help Arlen Specter, why not?
RENDELL: I can't explain their travel schedule. But I will say in defense, Sean, they did a terrific television ad for Arlen Specter that's been playing about 20 times a day everywhere in which the president says at the end, "I love Arlen Specter. Now I've run 14 times and I've been endorsed by a lot of people but nobody said they loved me," Sean. Nobody.
HANNITY: But wait a minute. I know but it's funny because I saw you on with Neil Cavuto earlier today and he said well, maybe nobody loves you, Governor, which I thought was a pretty —
RENDELL: It's possible. It's possible.
HANNITY: I love you, you bring me cheesesteak every time you come to New York.
All right, well, but it is — look, if they were going to offer their full support, don't you think the president should have come in to show that support?
RENDELL: Well, look, again, you know, in some places that support would have been helpful, in other places it might have been a disincentive, I mean, who knows. They poll, the White House polls, the Specter campaign polls.

I'm not close enough to say what that would be. Certainly if the president had come in he would have raised the enthusiasm level and turnout was key here. But again the president did a great ad, he did robo-calls, he did direct mail for Senator Specter.
HANNITY: Yes.
RENDELL: There wasn't one Democrat that went to the polls, Sean, that didn't know that the president wanted them to vote for Senator Specter.
HANNITY: But there's a big difference. You know, maybe — look, his track record isn't that great. If I'm Arlen Specter I'm not sure —
RENDELL: Right.
HANNITY: I want him to come — Martha Coackley, Creigh Deeds —
RENDELL: Well, sure, he came in —
HANNITY: — and Jon Corzine had his support.
RENDELL: Right. And I think those late-in-the-campaign appearances are frankly overrated because by then most people have made up their mind.
HANNITY: All right.
RENDELL: It can help turn out a little bit.

HANNITY: Let's move to the Pennsylvania 12. We were discussing this with Governor Palin. Look, this is —
RENDELL: I heard you.
HANNITY: All right. Thirty-six years is a long time, this Murtha seat, 2-1 Democrats outnumber Republicans in that district. Latest polls had it a one-point race. The Democrat is running as a conservative. He's pro-life, he's pro Second Amendment.
Would have voted against the health care. Would have voted against cap-and-tax. And it's still a close race. Why?
RENDELL: Well, first of all, one thing you didn't say, Sean, I'm not sure you know but in 2004, that district went for John Kerry. But in 2008 it went for Senator McCain.
HANNITY: That's true.
RENDELL: It's one of the few districts in the country that flipped. So it's a Republican performing district even though the Democratic registration, number one. Number two, of course, Mr. Critz who ran a very good race, by the way, he was with Congressman Murtha, and again, more in the role of the incumbent than Mr. Burns.
So I think, look, there's no doubt there's an anti-incumbency. When Senator Bennett lost in Utah, someone who's been a good rock solid conservative and a good senator, it proves that the anti-incumbency is out there against everybody. Democrats and Republicans alike. And you saw what happened in Kentucky. That certainly was a slap in the face to the incumbent Republican establishment.
HANNITY: Well — well, maybe the establishment — maybe you have a point there, but I also think that Americans are responding completely, and it's a complete rejection of the direction that I think this administration and Congress is taking the country in.
I think a lot of people are concerned about record deficits, weakening of our national defense, all the issues we talk about on a regular basis but, you know, to run completely against the National Democratic Party agenda, I can't think of a single Democrat that is out there doing that, can you?
RENDELL: That's running from the agenda?
HANNITY: Yes.
RENDELL: Well, look, when you say, for example, that Mark Critz is pro-gun and pro-life, any Democrat in that area is always pro-gun and pro- life. There's no question about that.
I had a tough time when I ran the first time in that area. I did better the second time when I ran for re-election. But those are stances you've got to take. Health care, you know, wasn't popular. I think you and I have discussed this, we disagree. I think it was misunderstood.
And cap-and-trade, everyone is worried about the economy. So I agree, cap-and-trade is not very popular.
HANNITY: All right. But the bottom line, as you even acknowledge, it's going to be a tough year for Democrats this year?
RENDELL: Not as bad as you expect, Sean. Not as bad — mark me down and we'll make another bet.
HANNITY: All right. We're going to bet. And this time it's — I want two cheesesteaks and I'll — and I'll give Ruth's Chris gift certificates for your military friends. Fair deal?
RENDELL: OK.
HANNITY: And I'm —
RENDELL: Fair deal as always.
HANNITY: All right.
RENDELL: You're the best conservative in the country.
HANNITY: Oh, I don't know if you said that with utter contempt or it's a compliment.
RENDELL: No, no. It's a very low bar, but you're the best conservative.
HANNITY: You're the best of the worst, Hannity. I don't know how to interpret. I'm going to take it in a good way.
All right, Governor, good to see you.
RENDELL: Take care, Sean.
HANNITY: Thanks — thanks for being with us.

Rakhi Chases Rani

Sunday, March 29, 2009

rakhi sawant

Imagine the hot and saucy Rakhi Sawant flirting with Bollywood’s demure babe Rani Mukherjee

Some girls just wanna have fun. Rakhi Sawant has it in a song she recently shot for a Yashraj Film.

Titled Hadippa , the film stars Rani Mukherjee and Shahid Kapur in lead. And Rakhi has done an item-cum-funny song for a particular situation with Rani, where she tries to woo Rani who is in the disguise of a Sardar boy. And thus the picturisation of the song turns out to be funny. In the song, Rakhi chases Rani and openly declares her love.

Rakhi shot the song at Yashraj Studios few days back. And according to sources, the song is unlike any of her previous numbers. It’s not raunchy. In fact, it has a dash of comic element. Rakhi’s last item song ‘Dekhta Hai Tu Kya’ in Krazzy 4 was also funny, where cleanliness freak Irrfan Khan wanted to wipe off a scorpion tattoo from Rakhi’s waist.

Of late, Rakhi has taken keen interest in comedy. She is not only doing funny songs but also had a stint with comedy on TV as a host on her chat show, ‘The Rakhi Sawant Show’. Then she also participated in the Star Plus comedy show ‘Arre Diwano Mujhe Pehchano’ along with celebs like Gulshan Grover , Mandira Bedi , Divya Dutta and Mahesh Manjrekar .

‘Hadippa’, directed by Anurag Singh, has been on floors for quite some time now.

Raima Sen out, Neetu Chandra in

Friday, March 27, 2009

neetu and raima sen

Ram Gopal Varma has started shooting for his ambitious project Rann, but not before a last minute change in the film’s cast. Raima Sen is no longer part of the film and replacing her is Neetu Chandra.

The reason given to Raima is that she is not suitable for the role. More amused than upset, Raima recalls a hilarious moment when the Rann director informed her of the change in cast. “Ramu said that he had re-written the part and I was not suitable for it. I found that strange. How can a character be changed just a few days prior to the shoot?”

Raima was later told by the dress designer of the film that she was replaced because there was ‘a sexy item song’ in the film, which apparently Raima wouldn’t be able to carry off. “But we had discussed the ‘sexy item song’ for three months. I seemed capable of carrying it off well then. Now suddenly, I’m not right for the song? It seems very strange to me. I gave up a Bengali and Tamil film to do Rann.”

Meanwhile, Neetu confirmed that she had been asked earlier in the week to join the Rann team. “I don’t know whom I’m replacing, or why. I’m just happy to work with Ramuji and Amitabh Bachchan. It has been my dream to work with him.”

Karan: I can never make a film without Shahrukh

Thursday, March 26, 2009

It’s a reaffirmation of their friendship, this film that Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar are co-producing called My Name Is Khan.

The ‘Khan’ in the title is incidental; SRK’s character in the film is Rizwan Khan, who is autistic with limited social interaction abilities. Apparently, the film has generated interest among Indian and overseas distributors already. Karan is aware that he’s on thin ice, directing a film that has characters and situations he’s unfamiliar with.“I am the wrong man to direct this film,” he admits. But at the heart of My Name Is Khan is a tender love story and at directing that, Karan is king. “How can I not have romance in my films?” he asks. “Every filmmaker has to evolve some time. I wanted to make a film in the realm outside my comfort zone. And Shibani Bhatija came up with this mind-blowing script that challenged my abilities,” he says.

His lead actor has a witty reply when asked about being the film’s co-producer too. “Karan doesn’t want to pay me what others do, which is very little, so he said, ‘I can’t underpay you like this, so you be my partner.’ That’s how we’re producing this film,” laughs SRK. Karan admits, “It’s true, I can never put down his price on paper. But considering we were both passionate about the subject, we said why not co-produce the film? We’ve known each other so long (their dostana is 16-years-old) that this new initiative is just an extension of our emotions. Besides, I can never make a film without Shah Rukh. He is a big part of me and my family. He’s like the older brother I never had. I love SRK as a unit — that includes his wife, children, sister and his in-laws.” So, a huge set has been put up at Mehboob Studios and shooting is on with Kajol. Shah Rukh, who is still recuperating from his shoulder surgery, will join the unit by the end of this month.

Whether it is infidelity or homosexuality, Karan hasn’t hesitated to push the envelope and break barriers in the kind of films he is making. His last film, Dostana, directed by Tarun Mansukhani, was among the biggest hits of 2008 and crossed Rs 100 crore. Both SRK and he are determined to push their production houses to the top slot in Bollywood. While SRK is producing Ra-1 and Happy New Year this year, Karan has Wake Up Sid directed by Ayaan Mukherjee, another untitled film by Renzil D’Souza and an animation film Koochie Koochie Hota Hai. “I’m giving new directors a chance and am open to good scripts,” says Karan, “Being in mainstream cinema gives production houses like ours the edge to reach a wider audience. It’s time to move forward.” How was the emotional reconnect with Kajol after eight years? “Shah Rukh and Kajol are indispensable. She’s one of the most talented actresses of Hindi cinema. Every time we wrap up a film, both of us cry, while Shah Rukh looks at us in amusement and asks, ‘What’s wrong?’” says Karan in exasperation.

Aamna Sharif : Aftab really made me comfortable

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

She is an extremely popular name and face on Indian television courtesy her portrayal of ‘Kashish’ in TV serial ‘Kahin To Hoga’. Now the extremely pretty and talented Aamna Shariff is all set to make her big Bollywood debut with the romantic comedy Aloo Chaat. In an exclusive interview with us, Aamna speaks about her first film, her first co-star Aftab and her love for all kinds of Chaats.

Aloo Chaat is your debut film in Bollywood. How do you feel?I feel great. Before I started doing T.V., I was modeling for a couple of years. I did a few ads and music videos and always wanted to start off with a film. But one fine day I was offered a T.V. show, ‘Kahin To Hoga’, the script of which was so good that I simply couldn’t refuse it. Today I am proud that I started with television and finally here I am doing something which I always wanted to do. So it’s a dream come true for me.How did you bag the film and what made you say yes?Post ‘Kahin To Hoga’, I took a break for a year and a half and heard a lot of scripts. I actually wanted to debut with an out and out romantic film but when I heard the script of Aloo Chaat it was such a wonderful script with clean humour that I didn’t think twice. I am glad that I took it up as my first film
The film seems like a romantic comedy. Can you elaborate?Yes Aloo Chaat is a light hearted romantic comedy. It’s a very sweet film with some really chatpata characters.

What’s your role in the film?My character’s name is Aamna in the film. She is a Muslim girl who is born and raised in the US. Though she has been in US, her values are very much Indian which is why when she first comes to India, she is seen mostly in Indian attire. She is a sweet, fun loving and family oriented girl.

How was it working with Aftab, your first co-star?It has been a wonderful experience. Aftab is not just a very good actor but a very good human being. Initially I was a bit nervous as Aftab is very good at comedy and I needed to match his timing but he really made me comfortable and we really hit off. We even share the same Sun-Sign. I am happy that people are liking our chemistry

The film also has Linda Arsenio, so are you two girls vying for Aftab’s attention? Is it a love triangle?I wouldn’t like to say much about that. You need to watch it for yourself (laughs). As for Linda, all I can say is that she is a complete pleasure to work with.

How was it working with director Robby Grewal? It was great. Robby is new age, young and is very clear with what he wants. He is the kind of director who gives you complete freedom as an actor.

The first thing that comes to one’s mind when we say Aloo Chaat is the yummy chaats so are you a chaat person?I am a complete chaat person. I love all kinds of chaats. In fact, my mom keeps telling me to go easy on chaats (laughs) but I enjoy them nevertheless and then work out a little more. My all time favorite chaat is Pani Puri.

Coming back to your career, now that you have made your debut in Bollywood, is it good-bye to T.V.?I would never say goodbye to television. That is so harsh. Whatever I am today is because of T.V. so I would never make such a statement. All I would say is I like to concentrate on one thing at a time and right now I am focusing on doing films.

How similar or different is it shooting for a T.V. serial and working in a Bollywood film? The big difference is that when you are doing T.V. show, you don’t know where to take your character graph and which track the serial will be heading in. In films, you have the script ready with you and know where to take the character.

Your good-friend Rajeev Khandelwal made a super debut last year with Aamir. Did you get to see the film?Of course I saw the film. It’s a lovely film and Rajeev is brilliant. You need a lot of guts to take such a film for your debut and he really lived up to all expectations.

What kind of roles are you looking at doing now?I don’t want to have any particular mindset. I would like to do every role that is challenging rather than go with easy characters. At the same time, I would love to do a hard core romantic role and even do a role without make-up
Any dream actors and directors you would wish to work with…I am just starting out. I would obviously like to work with all the great directors and actors. I have always admired the way Aamir Khan has worked so I would like to work with him.

What are your future projects?I have signed a film but can’t talk much about it. Right now I am just waiting for the audience reactions to Aloo Chaat.

Finally give us 3 good reasons to watch Aloo Chaat? It’s a very well directed film, has some brilliant characters and is a really sweet, clean, funny film.
