How to Embed RSS Feeds into HTML Web Pages – The Easy Way

Sunday, February 28, 2010

embed rss feeds Q. Yugalkishore is looking for a simple solution to help him embed RSS feeds from Reuters website into his HTML web pages.

A. While there are tons of scripts that convert RSS feeds into Javascript*, I recommend using Google Gadget Creator for adding feeds to web pages – it’s easy as well as customizable.

*If you are looking for a non-Javascript solution, get one of these Flash based RSS widgets from Yourminis or WidgetBox.

add-rss-websiteStep 1: Copy the URL of that RSS feed to the clipboard (make sure you copy the location of the feed, not the website).

Step 2: Append the feed URL to this string- http://gmodules.com/ig/creator?url=

Confused ? Let me illustrate that with a quick example. Say the RSS feed address is http://feeds.labnol.org/labnol, then our string becomes:

http://gmodules.com/ig/creator?url=http://feeds.labnol.org/labnol

Step 3: Open this new link in your web browser, adjust the dimensions of the gadget, change the border color and finally click "Get the Code" button.

Place this Javascript code anywhere in your web page where you want the RSS items to be displayed.
Your site visitors can now scan the Reuters news headlines without leaving your website.

How to Read Popular Magazines on your Desktop for Free

Saturday, February 27, 2010

free online magazines

This is a very simple & non-geeky trick to help you read the latest issue of popular magazines like PC Magazine, MIT Technology Review, Popular Mechanics, MacWorld, Lonely Planet, Reader’s Digest, etc without paying any subscription charges.

You will also get to read adult magazines like Playboy and Penthouse. Best of all, these digital magazines are exact replicas of print and served as high-resolution images that you can also download on to the computer for offline reading.

How to Read Online Magazines for Free

safari-magazines Step 1: If you are on a Windows PC, go to apple.com and download the Safari browser. Mac users already have Safari on their system.

Step 2: Once you install Safari, go to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced and check the option that says "Show Develop menu in menu bar."

Step 3: Open the "Develop" option in the browser menu bar and choose Mobile Safari 1.1.3 – iPhone as the User Agent.

iphone-user-agent

Step 4: You’re all set. Open zinio.com/iphone inside Safari browser and start reading your favorite magazines for free. Use the navigation arrows at the top to turn pages.

For people in countries like India who are already subscribed to Zinio Digital Magazines, this hack is still useful because you get access to certain magazines which are otherwise not available for subscription via Zinio (e.g., Penthouse and Playboy).

Geeks may write a AutoHotKey script or create a "scrolling capture" profile in SnagIt that will auto-flip magazine pages and save all the images locally. Thanks Scott. And here’s a related trick on how to read Wall Street for free.

Read any Web Document Directly in Google Docs – Similar to Gmail

Friday, February 26, 2010

Open as Google Document Gmail has this nice feature where you can open PDF files and Office documents directly in your Google Docs account bypassing the need of any desktop software like Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Office.

If you find this Gmail feature handy, you’ll probably also enjoy using the "Send to Google Docs" extension for Firefox.

Send to Google DocsThis extension (download link) lets you read online documents directly in your Google Docs account with a simple right click (see screenshot).

It works with popular file formats like PDF, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and all Open Document formats.  "Send to Docs" can also import HTML web pages in Google Docs provided they have the right extension.

You right click any document link on the web, choose "Send to Google Docs" from the context menu and the file will immediately open as a Google Document. The file also gets saved permanently in your Google Docs account.

I’ll distribute this add-on directly from the Firefox official site once it gets approved by the Mozilla team. Similar ‘direct web uploaders’ already exist for Scribd and Flickr.

Exploding iPhone Investigation

Media reports claiming that one or more iPhones have exploded in Europe have led Apple to investigate, according to Reuters.

One such report includes the case of an 18-year-old iPhone user in France who claims to have heard a hissing noise coming from his girlfriend’s iPhone before it shattered. The teenager reportedly suffered minimal injuries from the incident, which resulted in his eye being struck by a piece of iPhone glass, as reported by Google.

Helen Kearns, European Commission Spokesperson for Consumer Affairs, explained the following at a news briefing: "Apple has come back to us ... and what they've said to us is that they consider these are isolated incidents. They don't consider that there's a general problem."

"They're trying to get more information on the specific details of those incidents, and they will do tests as necessary to investigate the possible cause," Kearns added.

Although the current media reports share a small amount of explosion cases for the iPhone, numerous similar cases have been reported by users of the iPod. According to Google, in late July, Seattle-based television news station KIRO reported that an “alarming number” of iPods had “suddenly burst into flames and smoke, injuring people and damaging property."

Useful Google Talk Bots That You Must Add as Friends

Thursday, February 25, 2010

google-talk-botsYou can do lot of interesting stuff with Google Talk like get alert notifications, save bookmarks to delicious, manage web calendars, set reminders, write blogs, and so much more.

Such features can be easily integrated into Google Talk through ‘bots’ which, in simple English, are like virtual friends who are online 24×7 and will always respond with a smile to your questions or requests.

Here are the eleven most useful ‘bots’ that transform Google Talk into a more useful program:
feeds 1. imfeeds@gmail.com – Add this IM Feeds bot as your Google Talk buddy and you’ll be able to read any blog or website that syndicates content via RSS feeds.

To subscribe to a website in GTalk, simply send a new IM message that says "sub labnol.org" where labnol.org is the site address that you want to read inside Google Talk.

friendfeed2. friendfeed@bot.im – This secret bot lets you post to FriendFeed from Google Talk. You may submit either hyperlinks or text messages.

3. imified@imified.com – This imified bot turns Google Talk into a real powerhouse.
imifiedYou can post bookmarks to delicious, send messages to Twitter, submit blog entries to WordPress, Tumblr or Blogger, manage events in Google Calendar, shorten long URLs, run whois and so on.

anothr 4. inezhabot@gmail.com – Like IM Feeds, iNezha bot helps you read feeds inside Google Talk but this is slightly more versatile. For instance, you can simply say "digg" and it will show a list of all feeds that match that search term so you don’t have to type (or copy-paste) feed addresses.

translation 5. Translation – This is a free service from Google that helps you translate words from a foreign language into your native language. Just add the relevant bot (e.g. hi2en@bot.talk.google.com for Hindi to English or en2hi@bot.talk.google.com for English to Hindi) as your buddy, send him a message and it will get translated instantly.

twitter 6. Use Google Talk with Twitter – Invite twitter@twitter.com to become your friend in Google Talk and verify your account. Now whenever you IM this new friend, the message will automatically publish on your twitter account.

alarm7. Set Task Reminders – If you need to remember something important, Google Talk can send you reminders for that event.

Just add timer to your Twitter friend’s list and then add twitter@twitter.com to your buddy list in Gtalk. Now if you want to get a reminder after 50 minutes, send a direct message to twitter  like "d timer 50 pick kids from school" and a reminder will automatically pop up in your Google Talk after 50 minutes.

8. Transliteration – If you want to chat in your mother tongue (like Hindi or Tamil) but feel more comfortable using the English keyboard, Google Transliteration bot will come in handy.

For instance, add en2hi.translit@bot.talk.google.com to you friend’s list in GTalk and all messages you type in English will get transliterated in the language of your choice.  Available only for a few Indian languages.

9. Xpenser – With xpenser, you can record travel expenses via email, SMS or even Google talk. Add xpenserbot@gmail.com as your buddy and send a message like "lunch 33.2 with Bill Gates" and that will be added as an expense to your online spreadsheet that can be accessed from anywhere.

ping 10. Ping.fm – Like Imified, ping.fm is one of the most useful Google bots out there especially if you are a social networking or micro-blogging addict.

Add pingdotfm@gmail.com to Gtalk and you can communicate with twitter, jaiku, wordpress, identi.ca, facebook, myspace, bebo, friendfeed, linkedin, tumblr, plaxo, friendster, delicious and more.

meshly 11. Meshly – Add meshly@gmail.com as your friend and you’ll be able to post web link to your Meshly account via Google Talk. You can also add tags, categories and description to your hyperlink via Gtalk itself.

Why Was Google's Voice iPhone App Rejected? Apple Explains...

Apple has officially answered FCC questions about why Google Voice was rejected to appear in App Store. For those who didn’t keep track of the news, Apple rejected the Google Voice application for iPhone and removed all related third-party application from App Store. The rejection has drawn great attention & criticism around the net and even Federal regulators wanted to know why Apple rejected Google’s innovative Voice app from its App Store.
This is not the very first time Apple rejected iPhone applications submitted for App Store. Developers, bloggers and journalists around the net have criticized Apple for rejecting applications especially for those innovative applications trying to add feature and even replace iPhone’s default application like Phone or Mail applications.
Okay, here is the Apple’s answer to FCC’s question on why the Google Voice application was rejected:

Contrary to published reports, Apple has not rejected the Google Voice application, and continues to study it. The application has not been approved because, as submitted for review, it appears to alter the iPhone’s distinctive user experience by replacing the iPhone’s core mobile telephone functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for telephone calls, text messaging and voicemail. Apple spent a lot of time and effort developing this distinct and innovative way to seamlessly deliver core functionality of the iPhone. For example, on an iPhone, the “Phone” icon that is always shown at the bottom of the Home Screen launches Apple’s mobile telephone application, providing access to Favorites, Recents, Contacts, a Keypad, and Visual Voicemail. The Google Voice application replaces Apple’s Visual Voicemail by routing calls through a separate Google Voice telephone number that stores any voicemail, preventing voicemail from being stored on the iPhone, i.e., disabling Apple’s Visual Voicemail. Similarly, SMS text messages are managed through the Google hub—replacing the iPhone’s text messaging feature. In addition, the iPhone user’s entire Contacts database is transferred to Google’s servers, and we have yet to obtain any assurances from Google that this data will only be used in appropriate ways. These factors present several new issues and questions to us that we are still pondering at this time.
The answer is not very convincing.

How to Buy Genuine Software Online for Less Prize

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Here are  tips to help you purchase licensed software programs online at a price that is much less than the suggested retail price. You’ll also learn about useful sites that offer excellent deals on popular software titles. These include comparison shopping search engines, coupon code databases and sites that offer educational discounts on software to students and parents.

buy software online

Finding Software Deals on the Internet – Tips

1. Always do comparison shopping (keep reading to learn about sites that offer comparison shopping for software). Never assume that the online software store you are looking at offers the best deal just because it’s popular.

2. Always remember to check extras like free shipping; this can turn one deal better than the other one even though it may look the opposite way when you look just at the price of the software.

3. If there is a software program that you want to purchase, go to the manufacturer’s website and subscribe to their email lists and also follow their blog, Twitter feed, or Facebook page. Many companies regularly post deals and offers through these channels so you can be the first one to find about new deals.

4. Make sure to purchase upgrade versions if you are eligible. Most companies discount upgrade versions of their software for people who already own an older version, and often upgrade versions are less than half the price of the full retail version.  Run a software inventory check and you may discover software stuff you forgot you had.
5. Some companies will let you purchase a software program at upgrade price if you own a competing product, so be sure to check the company’s website for upgrade requirements before you buy.

6. Many software companies offer discounts on full versions of the software to registered users of a trial version of the software, or of the company’s limited versions of the same software or online services. They often also offer discounts on upgrades to registered owners of previous versions of software.

7. Before you buy software, always check how many computers a program is licensed to run on.  For instance, Microsoft Office Home and Student is licensed for use on 3 computers in the same household, so if you have 3 computers in your home the price of Office is virtually 1/3 of what it would be. Some programs are available as family packs (like Windows 7) so if you can use all the licenses available in the family pack, then it is usually cheaper per computer.

8. If a program is available in multiple editions (e.g. Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite or Autodesk Suite), try picking the edition that has the features you need – you probably don’t need every single feature or component of a software suite and this will help you save a considerable amount over purchasing the top edition.
For instance, I purchased Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection last year but I only need Photoshop, Acrobat, Dreamweaver and Soundbooth (occasionally) so a better choice would have been the Web Premium bundle.

9. If you are planning to use coupon codes with the order, make sure that all of the promotions can work together. In most cases, multiple discounts cannot be clubbed so if an item is already on sale, it may not be possible to use coupons in the shopping cart.

10. Corel, Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, Symantec, Google (SketchUp) and many other software vendors offer large academic software discounts to faculty, staff members, and students of recognized educational institutions. These licenses are identical to the retail versions except that you cannot use the software for commercial purposes. As a parent, you can probably make use of such offers if your child is attending college.

11. You can sometimes buy an older version of the software at a lot cheaper price than the latest version.

Comparison Shopping Sites for Software

While there are numerous online stores where you can find good deals on computer software, you should always consider using a comparison shopping search engine to know prices of the same product on different stores all across the web.

There are many sites that do this for you and very often these sites themselves will offer additional discounts to users who buy the produce via their site. However, to find the best deal (or lowest price), you should not limit yourself to one comparison shopping site.

1. Bing Shopping – Bing can help you quickly find the cheapest price of anything you’re looking for, including software. Bing searches the inventory of hundreds of online stores for the best price (including popular ones like Walmart, Buy.com, Best Buy, etc.), and then sweetens the deal by offering 2% – 20% Cashback from select stores.

Although you will still have pay the regular price from the online store, Microsoft will put that Cashback money in your PayPal account after your purchase has gone through, or you can choose to receive it as a check by mail. With Bing, you can easily figure out which online retailers offer free but the search engine doesn’t show the shipping rates if the retailer doesn’t have free shipping.

2. PriceGrabber.com – Another good site to do comparison shopping is PriceGrabber.  They will list the prices from multiple online retailers in a neat table and also offer a handy shipping calculator that will show you the final price of a product once you include postage and taxes applicable in your region.

The PriceGrabber site will always show listings from their "Featured Sellers" at the top even though they may not be offering the cheapest price so keep an eye on that.

3. Shopzilla.com – One more site you might want to try is Shopzilla.com, which again searches a multitude of online stores for the software you want to buy and lets you compare the price offered by different retailers. Like PriceGrabber, you can put in the zip code and it will show you the total price for your product including shipping and taxes if any.

Am not too sure what factors does Shopzilla use to determine the default order of retailers in the list, it does give you an option to sort results by price, store name, or store rating.  Overall, Shopzilla does seem to uncover some good deals, so make sure to check it when you are looking to buy any software program online.

Online Stores That Sell Software at a Discount

Here are some websites that almost always have good deals on software:
Amazon.com (software) – Amazon.com provides excellent bargains on software that they sell themselves, and as some third party merchants are also listed on the Amazon size, you can often find the best price right at this one site.
Then there’s a special page on the Amazon.com site that highlights popular software titles that are available with large discounts but exactly for the week. Amazon.com is also getting into selling downloadable software so you don’t have to wait for the software boxes to arrive via FedEx. Right now, you can purchase games and tax software using the digital downloads option and hopefully they will add more software categories over time.
Newegg.com – Newegg is one of the first sites that people check for computer parts, and they also have a large selection of software in store.  Newegg offers free shipping on everything, so if you are ordering a cheap program you will often come out cheaper here than at other sites, as most sites only offer free shipping on orders of $25 or more.

Newegg also sells OEM versions of Windows and other programs, but make sure you are eligible to purchase these software licenses before you buy yourself a copy. Normally, OEM licenses are tied to a single computer so you can’t use that same license on another machine.

eBay.com – eBay is known worldwide as the place for online auctions. Many small companies and individuals sell software on eBay, and it can especially be a great place to find an obscure program that has been discontinued.  Make sure you exercise a great deal of caution when buying software from eBay because if the deal is too good to be true, you are probably buying pirated software. Always look at the seller’s feedback and ask questions over email before making that final bid.

Software Discounts for Students, Parents and Non-Profit

If you are a student, educator, or from the non-profit community, check out JourneyEd.com for some unbelievable software deals and discounts. You’ll be required to fax your academic proof after the purchase and they’ll ship the box once it gets accepted. You can continue to use the software after you leave school or college.

The amazing thing about JourneyEd is this low price guarantee – "Buy your software now and if you see a lower advertised price of that same exact item (including our own sale prices) within 30 days of your purchase, we’ll refund the difference."

Other popular sites where students (and their parents), teachers and schools can buy cheap software include AcademicSuperstore.com and Gradware.com.

TechSoup.org is another good site that offers donated software licenses from companies like Cisco, Microsoft, Dell, etc. to nonprofits with valid 501(c)(3) status and public libraries listed in the IMLS database. TechSoup is only for organizations and not individuals. They they even prove free premium accounts from online services like Wikispaces and Flickr to eligible organizations.

Also check the software vender’s site, as many now have digital storefronts where you can directly purchase and download software. The boxed options from other stores are often still cheaper, but it is still worth checking especially if you have a coupon for their store.  Additionally, some companies offer free software for students like Microsoft Dreamspark.

Find Coupon Codes for Software Stores

Now that you’ve found the perfect place to buy software at the right price, let’s make the deal even sweeter – apply a coupon code and you might get some extra discount or free shipping or another perk with your purchase.

RetailMeNot.com – This coupon code site seems to always have the best and most recent coupons in my experience, so be sure to check this site first for finding coupons.  They also offer numerous ways to follow their site, including twitter, email and RSS so you can always stay informed of the latest deals.

CouponCabin.com – The site has a large database of coupons for a wide arrangement of online retailers.  The majority of the coupons they list are verified and guaranteed to work, but they do list user-submitted coupons and promo code that may or may not work.
Most coupons available on CouponCabin are for online purchases, but they do also have printable coupons that you can use at traditional stores like Walmart and Target.

Coupon Mountain – This has special page that lists current deals and coupons for software programs. In addition to user-submitted coupons, they also list special coupons that offer free shipping.

Fatwallet.com – Fatwallet is another good site to check, as it provides coupons and has its own cashback system. While the cashback is not usually as much as Bing offers, it is still worth checking out as deal coupled with cashback and a coupon could turn out be cheaper.

Slickdeals.net – Although not strictly a coupon website, Slickdeals often has some good deals posted by members for numerous products including software.

For International Customers – Most software stores won’t ship outside US or Canada so in that case, the only option is that you either use your international credit card and buy downloadable software or get the software box shipped to your friend’s address in US and ask him to ship it to you.

You may however have to pay taxes in your country. For instance, I had to pay around 9% customs duty for importing a software program from US to my address in India.

OpenDNS – What is OpenDNS and Why You Absolutely Need It ?

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

opendns-tutorial When you type an address like www.yahoo.com in your browser address bar, the computer doesn’t know where yahoo.com points to and it will therefore ask the DNS server.

The job of a DNS server is to translate this human-readable web address (like www.yahoo.com) into a computer-readable number also known as an IP address (209.131.36.158). Once your computer knows the IP location of a web domain name, it opens the website in your browser.

DNS is such an integral part of our Internet life working behind the scenes every time we connect to a website. In most situations, our Internet Service Provider specifies the DNS Server address that we key into the browser network settings or the router.

Unfortunately, this can prove to be the weakest link in the entire workflow. For example, if the DNS server of your ISP is slow, the time it takes to resolve the web address adds up to the overall loading time of the website.

To solve this problem, we look at a simple and reliable service called OpenDNS that speeds up your Internet connection and also handles some other very important issues. There are no software to install, it’s very easy to set up and the price is just right – $0.

opendns-ip-address

To use OpenDNS, all you have to do is open your Network Connections or Router’s settings page and update the default DNS server to point to the OpenDNS nameservers that are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

The whole process takes a few seconds but with this single step alone, you just made your computer safer and increased the overall browsing speed. Here’s why:

Unlike the DNS servers of your less reliable ISP, OpenDNS servers store the IP addresses of millions of websites in their cache so it would take less time to resolve your requests. So if you have asked for an IP address of a website that has been previously requested by another OpenDNS user, you will get the reply instantly.

opendns

Another huge advantage of using OpenDNS is that it blocks phishing websites from loading on your computer. It uses data from Phishtank, a community site that is also used by Yahoo! Mail to determine if some particular website is part of any online phishing scam.
OpenDNS also takes care of any typos that you commit while typing the name of popular websites. For instance, if you type www.gogle.com omitting the additional “o” by mistake, OpenDNS will open the main www.google.com site automatically.

website-typo

If you are a parent worried about kids visiting adult websites on the home computer, you can configure OpenDNS to block any adult website from loading on the computer. In fact, quite a few business places use OpenDNS to block social sites like MySpace and Facebook on employee computers.
Power users can assign abbreviations or OpenDNS Shortcuts to access their favourite websites more quickly.
For instance, you can set “mail” as a shortcut for http://mail.google.com/ or something like “a” for www.reallylongname.com – just type the shortcut to access the site. A good alternative for browser based bookmarks and it works across all computers where you have logged in to your OpenDNS account.

opendns shortcuts

Now that you are prepared to switch to OpenDNS, please don’t expect huge gains in browsing speed since OpenDNS only improves the cycle between your computer and the DNS server.

And do keep handy the old DNS settings given by your ISP as you may need them in the extreme scenario when OpenDNS system goes down or you want to disable / remove OpenDNS completely from your computer.

Free iPhone Games Produces Varying Amounts of Fun

One of the iPhone’s most revolutionary features is its large library of instantly accessible free games.
The question is whether any are worth your time. To find out, I thought I’d put the App Store to the test by downloading the top 10 free titles from the “All Games“ category (based on number of recent downloads as of July 17, 2009), and playing each one for as long as it held my attention. The only caveat was a 15-minute time limit for each game. If a free game holds your attention for at least 15 minutes, that’s good.

1. “Wooden Labyrinth 3D Lite”
I had a love/hate relationship with my old tabletop Labyrinth game as a kid. I loved the concept, but I hated how much I sucked at manipulating those little knobs to guide the ball past the holes. The iPhone version, with its simple tilt controls, makes things more enjoyable. I’m surprised how accurate and realistic the physics are, and I love the way the 3-D perspective shifts as you tilt the unit, making the screen feel like a window into an alternate world. The randomly generated levels in this “lite” version are hit-or-miss, but the variable difficulty ensures lot of replay value.

10 things you can and 10 things you can't - iPhone Accessories

When developing applications for Apple iPhone

Things you CAN:

1. You can intergrate google maps links (both places and routes). This is a great feature for businesses to provide directions to their location.
In order to place a link to a place you use something like this:
Cupertino
If you want to place a route link you use:
Directions

2. You can use direct links to phone numbers, that the users can click to call. This is a great feature for places that require phone reservations (like restaurants).
To do so you have to wrap the number into a link like this:
1-408-555-5555
The browser automatically converts any number that looks like a phone to a link (if you want to prevent it you must break up the numbers using span elements, for example).

3. You can use the following web standards when designing a page for iPhone's Safari:
- HTML 4.01
- XHTML 1.0
- CSS 2.1 and partial CSS 3.xx
- JavaScript 1.4, including DOM support
- AJAX technologies, including XMLHTTPRequest

4. You can know if the user views your site through iPhone or another browser, so you can display your site in the appropriate way.
iPhone's user agent is:
Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543a Safari/419.3

5. You can use the following media:
Images:
GIF
PNG
TIFF
JPG
Audio:
AIFF
MP3
AAC
MPEG audio
AMR
3GPP
MPEG-4 audio
WAVE
3GPP2
Video:
M4V
3GPP
Quick Time Movie
3GPP2
MPEG-4

6. You can use cookies - i think we all know the use of this feature;

7. You can add event handlers to your page using the modern DOM API, add event listener, or the more traditional onclick attribute.

8. You can use double tap. This is a new form of user interaction with an web page that enlarges an element when the user double taps it. The element can be a DIV, list, table or an image. When double tapped it becomes full screen, if double tapped again it zooms out. This can lead to some interesting efects.

9. You can control the way Safari scales your content trough the "viewport" meta tag.
The viewport meta tag properties are:
width The default is 980. The range is [200, 10,000].
height The default is calculated based on the width and aspect ratio. The range is [223, 10,000].
initial-scale is the scale to render the page when it first loads. The default fits the page to the screen.
The range is [minimum-scale, maximum-scale]. Keep in mind that the user can change the scale, either through the pinch gesture or by a double tap.
user-scalable determines whether or not the user can scale the page. The default is yes.
minimum-scale is the lower bound for scaling. The default is 0.25; the range is [>0, 10].
maximum-scale is the upper bound for scaling. The default is 1.6; the range is [>0, 10].

Here are some examples:

10. you can override Safari’s default text size adjustment using this CSS property:
Can also be set to auto and a procentage mutiplier: style="-webkit-text-size-adjust:200%"

Things you CAN'T:

1. You can't use too many links on a page, because of the finger input. This is a common sense restriction, since the small screen will also require large text, for better readability.

2. You can't use file upload - This restriction's main disadvantage is that it will not allow users to upload pictures from iPhone's camera.

3. You can't use flash or java - This has been dicussed over the web even before the iPhone was launched, so no comments are necesarry.

4. You can't use mouse over events, also a nobrainer, because of the finger imput method. This eliminates hover styles, tips, or any other element that requires a mouse over event.

5. You can't use cut, copy, paste, drag-and-drop, and text selection operations. This can be a brake to text editing applications.

6. You can't use windows, resizing and scroll bars. The browsers automaticaly resizes the content to fit the screen. It can only scroll up or down.

7. You can't use WML (Wireless Markup Language). I bet noone will miss it.

8. You can't use downloads or plug-ins.

9. You can't use flash movies or media players because of the lack of flash support. The supported media formats will be launched by the iPhone direcltly so it's better to provide links to the media files.

10. You can't use frames. But you don't want to either.

Free Website Building Tools That Are Good Replacements for Google Page Creator

Monday, February 22, 2010

Google Page Creator AlternativesGoogle Page Creator is awesome – anyone can build a good looking website in minutes using the built-in templates or they can write pages externally (say in Dreamweaver) and upload them to Creator.
And everything is free – there are no ads on your pages and Google takes care of all the web hosting bills. But as they say, all good things come to an end, and so is Google Page Creator getting replaced by Google Sites.

Compare Google Sites with Google Page Creator

While Google Sites and Google Pages have common feature (like the WYSIWYG AJAX editor), they are still quite different. For instance, you can’t upload HTML pages to Google Sites and are therefore limited to using one of the built-in themes for your site design.
The second issue is that if you make a Google Site public, the associated ’site activity log’ also becomes public – most website publisher will have reservations sharing this data with unknown visitors. Lastly, all external hyperlinks are ‘nofollow’ if that means anything to you.
