Watch out Google, here comes Apple TV 2

Engadget is reporting that Apple TV is in line for a big makeover that will see the device being sold for just $99.

$99 for an Apple device? Not likely we say, but according to an Engadget source, the project was well underway before Google's TV announcement at I/O.

The new Apple TV is said to be heavily based on the next-gen iPhone build, complete with iPhone OS 4.0 and limited on-board storage. That's because Apple is planning on a cloud-focused service with streaming content via a revamped iTunes.

It will be capable of Full 1080p HD output and, if you do want to use local storage, you can hook it up to your Time Capsule. The report also suggests that there should be some sort of App Store compatibility, although quite how that will work on a big screen is open to debate.

If Engadget's source isn't telling porkies then this will be a great little device where the emphasis will be on paying for the content rather than paying for the hardware. And, because it's Apple, it will sell by the shed-load. You only have to look at the mayhem at the Apple Store today to realise that when Apple launches a new toy, it knows how to create a buzz.

AT&T Prepping Store Displays for Next-Generation iPhone?

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Boy Genius Report claims to have received word that AT&T is preparing to roll out large in-store displays for a new product, presumed to be the next-generation iPhone.

According to them, AT&T has started to send engineers out to corporate store locations to try and plan / start setting up a "new kind of display." We're told that this is most likely a new iPhone display as there isn't anything else that's dedicated to a single device that would require the resources this display will.

Boy Genius Report has long kept its ear to the ground for rumors coming out of AT&T and other wireless carriers and has in the past reported blocks on AT&T employee vacations during iPhone launch windows and reported just last week that the carrier had confirmed to its employees that the next iPhone will be launching in June.

iBrr Bluetooth Receiver & Remote for iPhone – New P2P Remote

Announcing that Techno Gurus, the developers of iBrr Bluetooth Receiver and Remote 1.0, has launched a new application in a new niche. This is a brand new app that uses peer-to-peer networking via WiFi or Bluetooth technology to transform an iDevice into a remote control. iBrr also provides a secure way to ensure that others have no access to the device.

iBrr Bluetooth Receiver and Remote is the original peer-to-peer music control app, and remains the most feature-rich device to device remote available in the app store. iBrr is easily the best-designed and easiest-to-use app for turning iPhones, iPads or iPod touches into a receiver and remote set. One device is used to control the music playing on the other, which is usually connected to a stereo or speaker system via the headphone jack or an Apple-brand docking station.

Devices can be mixed and matched. That means that an iPhone can be paired with another iPhone, an iPod touch or even the new iPad. Models don’t have to be current; an old one can be used with a new one. iBrr is the perfect answer for what to do with that “old” iPhone when a user has upgraded to the 3G or 3GS.

LG Innotek supplying iPhone HD 5MP camera as OmniVision shunned?

OmniVision are Apple’s current camera sensor suppliers for the iPhone 3GS, and a report in December last year suggested that they’d won the contract for the new, higher-resolution chip this time around. That was followed up with OmniVision executives apparently hinting earlier this month that a deal was in place. Whichever supplier is chosen, the 5-megapixel camera is expected to be paired with an LED flash, and have a second – lower resolution – counterpart on the front of the handset for video calls. We’re expecting Apple to announce the iPhone HD at the kick-off of WWDC 2010 on June 7th; SlashGear will be there, liveblogging the whole event.

Nike+ heart rate monitor for Apple iPod coming June 1

The news comes from a "Nike+ Pro" on the shoemaker's official forums. While the person did not reveal why the hardware has taken so long to arrive, they did announce the U.S. release, which will be followed by other international releases this summer.

"It will officially launch (in the U.S.) on June 1, 2010, although it may reach some retail outlets slightly sooner," the Nike official, named Clover, wrote. "It will reach Canadian markets in June and will launch internationally in summer 2010, exact date to be determined."

The person said they were not able to reveal the product's price, color, or device compatibility. However, an update to the Nike + iPod user guide last September stated that only the fifth-generation iPod nano was compatible with the new heart rate monitor.

Last year, people familiar with the matter told AppleInsider that the accessory was initially expected to launch alongside the new iPod nano. However, it was delayed until June for unknown reasons.

Evidence of the heart rate monitor can be found in the Nike+ menu on an iPod. The "Heart Rate Monitor" selection is available under the Nike + iPod settings. There, users can wirelessly link the device to their iPod nano.

Released last year, the latest iPod nano has a built-in pedometer for fitness-minded users. The device's built-in accelerometer helps to keep track of steps and meet fitness goals, with options for daily goals or constant step counting. Users can also track their runs and performance through the Nike + iPod sport kit, which includes a wireless sensor to be placed in the insole of a runner's shoe.
