Apple says terrorists could use iPhones to attack cell phone towers
Apple has tried everything to stop iPhone unlockers. Bricking iPhones didn't work -- it just generated more headaches and bad PR. Apple's internal protection technology turned out to be just as weak and poorly implemented as its consumer security on the iPhone -- the hackers quickly overcame the latest protections Apple threw at them. Now with its shiny new iPhone 3G S becoming yet the latest handset to be freed, Apple has turned to none other than the U.S. government for help.

The company has submit a report to the U.S. Copyright Office suggesting that iPhone unlocking be outlawed (and jailbreaking from the AT&T network, essentially as well as it would be impossible without unlocking) as Apple claims it threatens cell phone towers across America. Apple claims that unlocking the iPhone provides easy access to the iPhone’s BBP — the “baseband processor” software, which enables a connection to cell phone towers.

AT&T and iPhone -- Exclusivity Might End Soon

No one can deny the business sense that AT&T used when it locked up the iPhone from Apple as an exclusive back in 2007 when the phone first debuted. The iPhone has helped AT&T grow significantly since it debuted.

According to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, the partnership with Apple will inevitably end and ultimately the only differentiator between the wireless providers in America will be network quality. The exclusive agreement between Apple and AT&T is believed to end next year.

In Europe, O2 is facing the same problem as AT&T with its exclusive period ending. Apple is allowing O2 to keep the exclusive on the iPhone 3GS in the UK while opening the iPhone 3G up to other carriers. Reuters reports that AT&T added 1.4 million new subscribers in the second quarter and out of those subscribers about had more than 2.4 million iPhone activation during the quarter.

The prospect of losing the exclusive on the iPhone has to raise eyebrows at AT&T and with Wall Street. Research firm Pali Research issued a sell advisement on AT&T stock in June because it was believed to be losing its iPhone exclusive. At the same time, the research firm issued a buy order on Verizon, believed to be picking the iPhone up on its network.

Pali Research wrote in a report, "Our buy rating on Verizon is based on our view that its market share gains will lead to profit growth that tops other telecom companies and Wall Street consensus estimates. Our sell rating on AT&T is based primarily on our belief that its wireless business will enter a prolonged period of erosion after being propped up by the iPhone for the past two years.

Scribd iPaper – Embed Documents in Web Pages, Also Make Money via Google AdSense

Scribd, a perfect place for uploading Office documents and PDFs, has moved from Adobe Flash Paper to a new iPaper format that is definitely more impressive and also allows web publishers to monetize documents.

With the new iPaper format, you can embed virtually any document format into your website or blog as a flipping book with 3D page turning capabilities or in a landscape (presentation) mode.


This is very similar to the Issuu PDF Converter but the advantage is that you can print and search through documents inside the iPaper viewer – something which is not possible inside Issuu.

Scribd provides a simple QuickSwitch mode – you copy-paste a block of code in your blog and all documents/PDFs (that are mentioned in your articles) will be auto-converted into iPaper format without you having to upload files manually. This mode will also replace the document links in your web pages with an embedded document player. Simple!

Another attraction is AdSense – Scribd will pay blog owners who embed documents in their blogs using iPaper – the earnings will be based on the number of ad impressions served via Google AdSense. And if you are a content publisher, Scribd offers something similar to Ads for PDF where you also get to monetize your own documents.

Video Spin: A Better Video Editor Than Windows Movie Maker That’s Free & Supports YouTube

Free Web Clipping Tools: Permanently Save Anything That You Find On The Internet

With billions of web pages around, keeping track of information that you discover on the web is extremely tough. Some of us rely on bookmarks but they are unmanageable and become useless over time when the underlying pages disappear because the website structure may have changed.

Microsoft Onfolio – Onfolio is an outstanding note taking application that lets you collect information from web pages as well as all other Windows programs (like Excel, Outlook, Notepad, etc) so you have a central repository of all content captured from websites, emails, screenshots and documents.

Onfolio provides some very unique features. For instance, you can capture complete websites or single web pages in their entirety including CSS, Javascripts and images so the captured web page looks the same even in offline mode. Onfolio can also download PDF files and Microsoft Office documents from the web with a simple click.

A limiting point is that Onfolio stores all the content to your local hard drive and so you may not have access to your web research on another computer. You can however export web clipping as compressed web pages (MHT) and share them via email attachments.

Onfolio can either run as a standalone desktop application or as a sidebar in Internet Explorer provided you have installed Windows Live Toolbar. Other commercial alternatives to Onfolio include Microsoft OneNote and EverNote.

This is a perfect solution for grabbing specific portions of any web page that matter the most to you – it could be a video on YouTube, contact address of a friend, a quote on Wikipedia or anything else. ToRead and InstaPaper – You discover an interesting web page but do not have the time to read it. So you either save the URL of that page to your Browser bookmarks or store it in del.icio.us with the tags "follow" or "toread".

Google Notebook are currently not supported on Apple Safari or Opera.
With any of these tools on your system, there’s little probability that you will ever loose touch with important stuff you ever discovered on the Internet.

Iterasi is another promising tool for clipping web pages but it’s in closed beta. Also check out Ript for ripping text and images from web pages and converting them into scrapbook.

The First Video That Was Uploaded to YouTube!

Your favorite video site, YouTube, was created on Valentine’s day five years ago. The founders -- Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim – were working for PayPal before starting YouTube.

It’s an interesting story – these people wanted to share videos from a dinner party with friends but their email program won’t accept large video attachments. So they decided to design a simple video sharing site that went on to become one of the most popular sites on the Internet.

Here are some important moments from YouTube’s five year history:

Clip 1. This video clip is from YouTube’s garage days when they were housed in one of Sequoia Capital’s offices.


Clip 2. Chad Hurley and Steve Chen announcing on YouTube that they’ve been acquired by Google.


Clip 3. And now the clip you’ve been waiting for. This is the video that was uploaded to YouTube. The clip was uploaded by Jawed Karim, the third-founder of YouTube, who is now an employee of Google and also runs the unofficial Utube blog.

Add Text Captions To Your Web Images with CSS; Drive More Traffic

Websites like BBC or The New York Times always display images and pictures inside a box that is aligned either to the right or left of the web page. (see screenshot on the right)

You’ll also notice a 1-2 sentence long text caption just below the photograph containing brief description of the image, copyright information, etc.


There are two advantages of adding image captions in web pages:

1. Stylish and Read Friendly – Your visitors can easily get the context of the image from the small caption without having to read the full story.

2. SEO Friendly – Since captions describe the image in text and are located in close proximity to the image, they could be very effective in getting your images rank well on image search engines.

How to Add Text Captions and Align Images on Web Pages ?
With simple CSS and HTML, you can quickly add text captions to images very similar to BBC or Wikipedia:
Before we get into the code, here’s a snapshot of the end product. The Google logo is aligned to the right of the browser, is enclosed inside a box with borders that also contains a text caption.

  

Here’s the HTML+CSS code for the above implementation:
Step 1: Add the following CSS code to an external CSS file or to your blog template under the section.

 

Step 2: Now insert the following HTML code anywhere in the web page. The process is exactly the same as inserting regular images but we have just enclosed that inside a

tag.

Image Caption goes here.

 

In the above example, we add the file google.gif left aligned and the image has dimensions 276×120.
Replace left with right if you want to right align the image box. You’ll also need to modify the style:width of the

tag such it is equal to image width + 2.
You can also fiddle with the CSS to change the font name, size, border colors, background, margins, etc.
